Rush (adj.) Sudden and intense feeling of euphoria and pleasure.

A little bit o’ history

November 11th, 2014

We’re a boutique roastery specialising in the creation of exceptional coffees at affordable prices.
Coffee is absolutely our passion. In 2006 Hayden and Emma began transforming this passion utilising state-of-the-art technology and culminating in the birth of several unique Rush blends.

Our first major success was in the 2009/10 coffee awards with our Rush Espresso blend judged New Zealand’s best espresso. This blend has gone on to be New Zealand’s most awarded blend winning now 4 gold medals, 1 silver medals and two bronzes at the NZ Coffee Awards. In 2014 we were the only international roasters to receive a Gold Medal at the Australian International Coffee Awards – recognition on a global level; this validates what we are doing (and why we do it)!

Ethics are fundamentally important to us. Our beans are sourced from predominantly Fair Trade suppliers -high quality beans produced by growers who receive a fair price. We are also keen on promoting a pure product, certified organic where possible.

Hayden and Emma sell coffee locally at the Mangawhai Village Market, every Saturday. They grind the beans fresh to order and are always happy to talk coffee! If you’re ever in the area, pop in and see them – it’s always great to put faces to names of our loyal customers!

As the business grows, so does the Rush Family. In 2012 Hayden and Emma were joined by daughter Betsy, followed by her husband Aaron in 2015; making this a true family business. For something that started initially as a hobby, in a converted garage on the Prujean’s lifestyle block, at 88m² it has expanded quite considerably in recent years! Eventually Rush will move off-site to grow, but the same love and care will always be present in each roast regardless of location!
